The Virtues Project

The Virtues Project was honoured by the United Nations during the International Year of the Family as a model global program for all cultures. This program contains proven strategies for awakening virtues – the gifts within. It represents a holistic approach to character education that shapes and informs Braemar’s other Citizenship programs, with integration into Braemar’s existing curriculum.

The Virtues Project introduces the simple elements of character honoured by all cultures and spiritual traditions, and defines them by 52 basic virtues. We use “the language of virtues” for drawing out the best in our students, and employ strategies to inspire Excellence, Respect, Kindness, Commitment and Cooperation in them.

We strive to offer a positive approach to discipline, with restorative justice, in such a way as to turn our school into a community of caring. Our established boundaries in the classroom and on the playground remain Courtesy, Respect and Tolerance.

In the coming year, our school community will focus on a series of Virtues, which serve as a guide for everyone to nurture unity, community building, and inclusiveness at Braemar. Each month the school celebrates a different virtue, learning together the “affirmation” that accompanies that virtue, and honouring at our Formal Assemblies those in our community who have modeled it. Teachers spend the month exploring various aspects of the virtue through different activities in class, and connecting the virtue and its practise to the curriculum wherever possible. We encourage discussion and reinforcement at home.
